Inspired by the Roman legionnaires who did battle while living on daily rations of wheat and rye, Dr. Robert Jackson developed Roman Health Meal, a cereal made of wheat, rye, bran and flaxseed. The cereal corrected a vitamin deficiency in Dr. Jackson, improving his health and the health of many of his patients. In 1927, William Matthaei, a man with a German bread baking heritage dating back to the late 1800, bought Dr. Jackson's Roman Meal Company. The combination of the Matthaei family's continuing commitment to quality bread and the benefit of Dr. Jackson's recipe provided the Natural Whole Goodness found in each load of Roman Meal bread.
